I think he is 100% correct about this:

There is a worldwide secular religion which we may call environmentalism, holding that we are stewards of the earth, that despoiling the planet with waste products of our luxurious living is a sin, and that the path of righteousness is to live as frugally as possible. The ethics of environmentalism are being taught to children in kindergartens, schools, and colleges all over the world. Environmentalism has replaced socialism as the leading secular religion. And the ethics of environmentalism are fundamentally sound. Scientists and economists can agree with Buddhist monks and Christian activists that ruthless destruction of natural habitats is evil and careful preservation of birds and butterflies is good. The worldwide community of environmentalists—most of whom are not scientists—holds the moral high ground, and is guiding human societies toward a hopeful future. Environmentalism, as a religion of hope and respect for nature, is here to stay. This is a religion that we can all share, whether or not we believe that global warming is harmful.
”

- Kevin Kelly — The Technium

J Mascis performs Freak Scene Acoustic Solo (via Grungie)

J Mascis performs Freak Scene Acoustic Solo (via Grungie)

7 day road trip across the USA, in 4 minutes, by michel and...

7 day road trip across the USA, in 4 minutes, by michel and oliver gondry

via Lacquer: Behind » the dotmatrix project

Ghostland Observatory (via oremj)

Ghostland Observatory (via oremj)

Neatorama » Blog Archive » The Price of Food: 2007 vs....

Neatorama » Blog Archive » The Price of Food: 2007 vs. 2008

Temescal Street CollectiveA FREE outdoor summer movie series...

Temescal Street Collective

A FREE outdoor summer movie series featuring Bay Area Filmmakers. On Earth they are harmless, but scientists fear they could turn dangerous in space if cosmic rays cause them to mutate. Another problem is that kimchi has a short shelf life, especially when temperatures fluctuate rapidly, as they do in space.

“Imagine if a bag of kimchi starts fermenting and bubbling out of control and bursts all over the sensitive equipment of the spaceship,” Lee said.

(via Kimchi goes to space, along with first Korean astronaut - International Herald Tribune)

Firefox Victory (via intothefuzz)

Firefox Victory (via intothefuzz)

Jupiter’s Great Red Spot (NASA) (via pingnews.com)

Jupiter’s Great Red Spot (NASA) (via pingnews.com)

#21 (via Creative Review) closeup of a soap bubble

#21 (via Creative Review) closeup of a soap bubble

"Paint, computer and television screens, mobile phones, light bulbs, cushions, paper, mattresses, car..."

“
Paint, computer and television screens, mobile phones, light bulbs, cushions, paper, mattresses, car seats, carpets, steering wheels and polyesters are all made with materials derived from refined oil and natural gas. They’re all going to cost twice as much. If oil was $30 a few years ago and now it’s more than four times as much, well, there will be a lag and some belt tightening, but eventually the costs will be passed on.

This sounds depressing and ominous, but I sense that one’s quality of life is not actually tied to these goods, and is certainly not tied to the automobile and all the roads and services it’s demanded for almost a century. US commuters, for example, will probably blame the Arab world, but will also look for alternate solutions, like decent public transportation, and living closer to their place of work, which is also a good thing.

In fact, after some very nasty times we could — if we don’t let our anger and pain get the better of us — emerge with a better quality of life than what we have now.
”

- David Byrne Journal: 06.10.2008: Everything

via gnarlsbarkleyvideos

via gnarlsbarkleyvideos

Alan Watts - Work as Play (part 1) (via broodbot)found this on...

Alan Watts - Work as Play (part 1) (via broodbot)
found this on the dot matrix project blog - lots of great stuff there about music & video

sunset on mars, via stephs

sunset on mars, via stephs

Flickr: The Growing Up Star Wars: 1977-1985 Pool

Flickr: The Growing Up Star Wars: 1977-1985 Pool

“I know a lot of people who sit on the sidelines and complain...

“I know a lot of people who sit on the sidelines and complain about how everything goes down and they’re not willing to stick their neck out and get involved in process,” Fairey said. “It’s easy to criticise, but I saw Obama give a speech at the 2004 democratic convention and thought this is a politician who is saying something I want to hear.” Fairey’s poster is part of Artists for Obama, described by the campaign as “art and merchandise donated to the campaign by the artists to help us raise money and grow our movement”.
